Life of a Medical Officer – Part 2 (Measles Vaccination at Pal)

Hello everybody,

As mentioned earlier, we did ‘Measles Catch-Up Campaign’ Vaccination program successfully. But unfortunately, I was (/am) not in a condition to type a post, both due to health related issues and to monitor other national health-programs and their meetings. So, even today, I will try my best to let you visit the Pal, by pictures only. I hope, by the end of this post, some of the readers will get to know, what we used to go through ( irrespective of speeches of media and government).

The Poor Indian Government

At first, I want to thank you all for your unexpectedly, wonderful response to my earlier post. And those, who want to know, about the status of “Vaccination Campaign in Pal”, today we made our micro-plan again, considering its updated environmental conditions, and we are starting our journey tomorrow (which, by the way, at the time of writing this post is , Today) 5 am.

Coming to today’s topic. Few days ago, I got a call from my current senior officer, asking if I know anybody in the village, who can ADOPT PHC Devgarh. I was surprised and shocked to listen this and a lots of questions came into my mind. As did I do something wrong or if something terrible has happened with this PHC or why are Senior Officers searching for people who can adopt it. Being a junior I couldn’t ask many things on phone, so I just said, “Sorry to say sir ! But, as you know I have been on this PHC since last 2 months only; and since then, my all focus is on Measles Catch-up-campaign, I don’t know much of the villagers.” Sir hang up the phone, and called to one of my staff for the same thing.

Life of a Medical Officer

[ Note - Due to lack of time, instead of posting at relevant lines, I am posting all images and videos in the end of this post. I will reformat and correct grammatical mistakes, if and when I could get time. ]

Hello, I am Dr. Atul Tiwari, Medical Officer at Pratapgarh (Rajasthan). I was originally posted at PHC Avleshwar of Pratapgarh district. On July 25th 2012, I attended State level training and thereby became one of the district trainer (and The Youngest one) for Measles Immunization. It is a govt. program to vaccinate and/or re-vaccinate all children of age range 9 months – 10 yrs. And we were asked to achieve target 100% strictly, else we will have to complete this task without any extra financial help.

On 8th August 2012, I was (relieved from PHC Avleshwar and) ordered to join PHC Devgarh, which was said to be one of the toughest place where achieving a target of even 50% was a challenging thing. Now I had 2 PHCs to take care of, one officially (PHC Devgarh) and one unofficially (PHC Avleshwar, as there was no acting Medical Officer for the task). I relieved and joined from respective places on the same day. I don’t want to describe the PHC building / infrastructure at this point, as it will divert my original topic. But it should be pictured some other time. I just want to highlight that at that time I was completely unaware of geography of that PHC and its 34 villages.
